Reports
Qualifying
In the first qualifying, which took place on Thursday, Felix Rosenqvist set the fastest time ahead of António Félix da Costa and Alexander Sims . 90 seconds before the end, the session ended with the red flag due to an accident by Yūichi Nakayama . Lucas Wolf had an accident in free practice and did not take part in the session because his vehicle was not repaired in time.
In the second qualifying on Friday, the lap times were faster than the day before. Qualifying was interrupted by three red flags, which forced many drivers to break off their fast laps. Raffaele Marciello secured pole position from Rosenqvist and Alex Lynn .
Qualifying race
Lynn started well from third position and took the lead. Starting from pole, Marciello lost several positions and was fifth after the first lap. Rosenqvist took the lead on the first lap ahead of Lynn, Lucas Auer , Felix da Costa and Marciello. The safety car was sent out because of several accidents .
After the second lap, the track was opened again. Lynn took advantage of the flying start and overtook Rosenqvist on the start-finish straight . Auer made a driving mistake and hit the track barrier.
The first four set themselves apart from the rest of the field. In midfield, Ed Jones had to end the race because of a spin. Marciello put Felix da Costa and Rosenqvist Lynn under pressure. While Lynn withstood the pressure from Rosenqvist, Felix da Costa was unable to keep Marciello behind and was overtaken by him on lap five. In the following laps, Lynn pulled away from Rosenqvist, while Marciello narrowed the gap to Rosenqvist.
In the end, Lynn won ahead of Rosenqvist, Marciello, Felix da Costa, Pipo Derani and Sims.
Commenting on the race, winner Lynn said: “Looking at the qualifying race, that's good, but the Grand Prix is a different matter. Tomorrow counts. I have to try to stay calm and not make a mistake. "
run
Lynn started well again and kept the lead. Behind them there was contact between Rosenqvist and Marciello, during which Rosenqvist damaged the front right wheel suspension and had to end the race. The beneficiary of the incident was Derani, who worked his way up to second position. Shortly thereafter there was another accident in which John Bryant-Meisner , Lucas Auer and Sean Gelael were involved. The race ended prematurely for all three drivers. Since the race track had to be freed from the vehicles and debris, the safety car was sent out. It was leading Lynn ahead of Derani and Felix da Costa at this point.
After the third lap, the race was released again. Lynn defended his lead. Behind them Felix da Costa overtook Derani. Marciello drove behind Derani and put him under pressure for several laps. On the seventh lap, Marciello used Derani's slipstream and overtook him. On the same lap, Sun Zheng made a driving mistake which resulted in a collision with the barrier. He had to end his race.
In the meantime, Lynn had gradually increased his lead over Felix da Costa. On lap ten, Marciello came closer and closer to Felix da Costa. When catching up, however, he came out too far in the last corner and touched the boundary with the left rear wheel. The suspension was damaged and Marciello drove uncontrollably into the guardrail. His race was then over.
From that moment on, the first three drivers drove to the end of their race without any duels.
Lynn won the Macau Grand Prix for the first time ahead of Felix da Costa and Derani. Behind them, Sims, King and Jazeman Jaafar completed the top six. Jordan King drove the fastest lap.
Comments from the first three drivers
“This victory in one of the most famous Formula 3 races of the year means a lot to me. The Guia Circuit is one of the most demanding street circuits in the world and demands full concentration from the drivers - the smallest mistake can cost victory or even the race. So I'm all the more proud that I was able to win this season highlight. "
“When you return here as a race winner, another victory must be the goal. If that wasn't possible, at least I wanted to have a good fight, and I succeeded. I must therefore be satisfied with this result. These guys have been driving the car for two or three years now, compared to the last time I drove it a year ago. "
“It was a tough race because I had to start with used tires that I had already used in the second qualifying. It was difficult throughout the race because the car was understeer. So I'm very happy to be on the podium here. "
