Hans Achterhuis
Hans Achterhuis (born September 1, 1942 in Hengelo ) is a Dutch professor of applied philosophy at the University of Twente and one of the most famous philosophers in the Netherlands. At the moment he is mainly concerned with social and political philosophy as well as the philosophy of technology.
His latest books deal with utopia (“De erfenis van de utopie”, “The Legacy of Utopia”) and the relationship between politics and morality in the Kosovo war (“Politiek van Goede bedoelingen”, “Policy of good intentions”). He is co-author of American Philosophy of Technology: the Empirical Turn , which was co-authored with Albert Borgmann , Andrew Feenberg , Donna Haraway , Don Ihde Hubert Dreyfus , and Langdon Winner .
Main thought
His ideas mainly concern the philosophy of objects and advocate a morality of machines . In his opinion, objects should be more than morally neutral things and control people like barriers that force you to buy a ticket in the subway. Furthermore, they should exert moral pressure that is even more effective than threats of punishment . Achterhuis assumes that Utopia has failed, but that the world can still be improved if humanity transfers its morality to the machines and devices around it.
