History of Süptitz and Dreiheide

The history of Süptitz begins before it was first mentioned in a document in 1257. Around 940 Sipnizi is known as a German castle town in the Gau Nisizi on what was then the German border region. Around the year 1000, Wenden conquered the area and 100 years later, Germans were settled there under Bishop Benno von Meißen . Weidenhain was mentioned in 1151 as a Flemish settlement "Weyden vorm Holz". The first documentary mention was made in 1212, the Church of St. Martin, a Romanesque hall church, was built in the first half of the 13th century.

In 1300 there were many vintners living in Süptitz who were exempt from compulsory labor, community taxes and military service. Like everywhere else, the plague of 1347/48 left its mark. In 1358, a 45 acre vineyard was laid out in place of the old, now dilapidated, Süptitzer Castle.

From 1426 the Hussites invaded , with Süptitz being devastated by raids .

Luther was friends with the pastor in Süptitz, who was the first Protestant pastor to break celibacy. Dreiheide was therefore included as a station in the Lutherweg.

The village experienced a second almost complete destruction in 1637 during the Thirty Years' War , when the Swedish Field Marshal Johan Banér fought against imperial troops. Only the church remained damaged, the courtyards and the vineyards were devastated and burned down. On November 3, 1760, in the course of the Seven Years' War, the Battle of Torgau took place on the Süptitzer Heights, in which Hans Joachim von Ziethen (called Ziethen from the bush ) won a victory for the Prussians under Friedrich II against the Austrians . After Torgau fell to Prussia in 1815 as a result of the Congress of Vienna , viticulture lost its importance.

In 1900 the last wine press stopped working.

In the course of the Saxon municipal area reform in 1994, the three independent towns Großwig, Süptitz and Weidenhain merged to form the large municipality of Dreiheide.
