Districts
history
The street village was first mentioned in a document in 965. The place name was 965 Olsnic and was called Elsnig as early as 1368 . In between there were minor deviations.
In 1378 the Electors of Saxony transferred the village to the Buch monastery , after the abandonment by "Otto von Gnanstein kemerer von Grunow", with all rights and both courts. In the same year, "vrouwe Agnes von Gnannensteyn vrouwe czu grunav" renounced the village that had been her treasure. In 1379 the deed of sale and payment was issued by "Otto kemmerer von Gnannensteyn herr czu Grunow", which also mentions the church loan, i.e. the right of patronage. At this point in time, the church had already existed, as can be assumed from the structure of the building. In the same year several gentlemen renounced their rights in Elsnig. The type and scope remain unclear; they could have been fiefs of Herr von Gnandstein. In 1380 "Otto kemmerer von Gnannenstein" praised Abbot Nikolaus from the Buch monastery, if someone approached him about the sale or ownership of the village of Elsnig, "because we want to be sy, alzo is right". What is probably meant is legal assistance (trade) with claims of others.
In 1480 Abbot Simon von Kloster Buch awarded the third part of the court in Elsnig to the brothers Hans and Gallus Wilkein and confirmed to them the income that the previous feudal judges were entitled to in money, pigs, geese, chickens, lambs, or whatever that might be, after such number as has been held up to now.
Frederick the Great stayed on November 3, 1760 to visit the church. Here he received the news of the victory of the Prussians over the Austrians . In 1895 the Flur owned 787 hectares of land that was cultivated by farmers.
The higher-level administration exercised the Torgau office from 1551, the Torgau district from 1816, the Torgau-Oschatz district from 1994 and the northern Saxony district since 2008.
In the 1930s, a WASAG ammunition factory was built near Elsnig . In the course of this, the forest settlement was also created. The factory was partially dismantled after the Second World War and the area was used by the National People's Army until the fall of the Wall . In a pilot project from 2003 onwards, attempts were made to eliminate the environmental damage caused by the former WASAG plant, in particular the pollution caused by the pollutants TNT and 2,6- DNT .
In 2005, Elsnig hit the headlines when US Army specialists excavated a Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter that was shot down on April 13, 1945 and transported the pilot's remains to the USA.
