geography

Geographical location

Rackwitz is located around ten kilometers north of Leipzig city center and around thirteen kilometers south of Delitzsch .

The landscape belongs to the Leipzig lowland bay and is traversed by the Lober . In the vicinity of the village are the Schladitzer See and the Werbeliner See , which were created from flooded open- cast mine holes .

The New Leipzig Trade Fair and Leipzig / Halle Airport are not far from the town.

Community structure

The municipality includes the districts with the following population figures:

Rackwitz includes the corridors of Schladitz with Kömmlitz , Kattersnaundorf and Werbelin, which were devastated by the Delitzsch-Südwest opencast mine .

history

The Rackwitz area was formerly inhabited by Slavs . The place name "Rackwitz" comes from the Sorbian rak for "cancer", which can also be found in the coat of arms. The place Rackwitz emerged from the places Rackwitz and Güntheritz. The current district of Podelwitz is considered to be the oldest part of today's municipality. It is first mentioned around 1250. Since 1349/50 there are documents in which Zschortau and Rackwitz are mentioned. Brodenaundorf has also been mentioned since 1547 .

At the beginning of the 15th century the plague and famine raged in Rackwitz. During the Thirty Years' War, the municipality is badly plundered.

In 1815, as part of the Congress of Vienna, Rackwitz and Güntheritz and other districts that previously belonged to the electoral office of Delitzsch were ceded to Prussia and assigned to the Delitzsch district in the Merseburg administrative district of the province of Saxony . Podelwitz, on the other hand, belonged to the electoral or royal Saxon district office of Leipzig , remained with Saxony.

On June 21, 1871, a passenger train and a locomotive collided near Rackwitz . 19 people died and 56 others were injured.

In 1939 the councilors of Rackwitz and Güntheritz decided to found the common community of Rackwitz. In Rackwitz, all crashed aircraft were deposited on the premises of the light metal works during the Second World War and dismantled for replacement parts and for aluminum extraction.

As part of the dissolution of the states on the territory of the GDR , the Podelwitz district was assigned to the Leipzig district in 1952 . Rackwitz, Lemsel and the community of Zschortau were incorporated into the Delitzsch district . Between 1981 and 1992, the former districts of Schladitz with Kömmlitz, Kattersnaundorf and Werbelin were devastated by open- cast lignite mines in Delitzsch-Südwest and Breitenfeld .

On January 1, 1999, the previously independent municipality of Podelwitz, located south of Rackwitz, was incorporated into the municipality of Rackwitz, whereby the place changed from the district of Leipziger Land to the district of Delitzsch . As part of this restructuring, the very profitable industrial area Podelwitz had to be handed over to Leipzig. At that time, the industrial park represented half of the total area of Podelwitz.

The former municipality of Zschortau with the districts of Biesen, Brodenaundorf, Kreuma and Lemsel, as well as the municipality of Rackwitz and Podelwitz merged into one large municipality on March 1, 2004 for economic reasons.

Blazon : "In green, divided by a silver wave bar, above a golden sword, below a growing golden crab."

Even after the political change in 1989/1990 , metal construction and metal processing companies can be found in the town. In the Rackwitz light metal works , the only aluminum processing plant in the GDR, the GDR coins delivered by the branches of the GDR State Bank were melted down after the monetary, economic and social union . The plant has belonged to Norsk Hydro since 1998 .

With the Agrar-Umwelt-AG, which is a subsidiary of Südzucker-Mannheim, there is an important agricultural company that also operates a larger biogas plant. Otherwise there are rather small craft businesses, recycling yards, haulage companies and machine builders.

Road traffic

Located between Leipzig and Delitzsch, Bundesstrasse 2 and Bundesstrasse 184 pass the town. The Leipzig-Mitte junction of the A 14 is not far from Rackwitz . Several bus routes connect Rackwitz with surrounding communities.

Rail transport

Rackwitz train station

Rackwitz has had a rail connection since 1857. In 1859 the first train passed through Zschortau. In 1902 the last 37 km long Delitzsch Kleinbahn opened . It connected numerous places in what was then the Prussian district of Delitzsch that were outside the city. The route also ran through parts of the large lignite mining area between Delitzsch and Leipzig. Passenger traffic ended in 1972. A year later, the last remaining freight traffic was finally stopped and the line was closed. A short time later the tracks were completely dismantled.

The Rackwitz (b Leipzig) and Zschortau train stations are located on the double-track electrified main line Leipzig - Bitterfeld - Dessau / Wittenberg . Both stations belong to the network area of the Central German Transport Association (MDV) , Rackwitz station is in tariff zone 164, Zschortau in zone 165.

The following lines stop at both stations:

line route Tact
S 2 Leipzig-Stötteritz - Leipzig Central Station (deep) - Delitzsch - Bitterfeld - Dessau / Rosslau - Magdeburg Every two hours
S 2 Leipzig-Stötteritz - Leipzig Central Station (deep) - Delitzsch - Bitterfeld - Lutherstadt Wittenberg Every two hours
S 2 Leipzig-Stötteritz - Leipzig Central Station (deep) - Delitzsch (- Bitterfeld) Repeater trains every hour

With the commissioning of the Leipzig City Tunnel on December 15, 2013, the stations were integrated into the network of the Central German S-Bahn and the range of connections expanded.

Since December 2017, the S2 has been running every hour from Leipzig-Stötteritz via Bitterfeld to Dessau or Lutherstadt Wittenberg. Thanks to additional repeater trains, there is an almost 30-minute cycle between Leipzig-Stötteritz and Bitterfeld, Monday to Friday from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. At the weekend, the 30-minute cycle begins at 6:00 a.m. the reinforcement trains then begin / end in Delitzsch unt. Bf.

In addition, new night connections were created on weekends, which are connected to Leipzig's local transport in Leipzig Hbf (deep) in the cycle node.

education

There are two elementary schools in the municipality: the Rackwitz elementary school, where 92 students study, and the Zschortau elementary school, which has 105 students. To attend a secondary school, the students have to go to Krostitz or Delitzsch . The international educational institute AIZ of the German Society for International Cooperation is located in the district of Zschortau .

Recreation

Rackwitz is not far from two flooded open-cast mine residual holes - the Schladitzer See and the Werbeliner See . Swimming has been possible at Lake Schladitz for several years. In addition, various courses are offered on and in the water. A bike path leads around the lake. In summer there are regular events on the beach of the lake.

The Werbeliner See emerged from the “Delitzsch-Südwest” open-cast mine. A cycle and hiking path enables the lake to be reached directly from Lake Schladitzer and from Delitzsch. Today it is a bird sanctuary and has a rich nature and landscape. There is a nature trail on the adjacent Grabschützer See.
