history
The two places Zinna and Welsau are of Sorbian origin. Zinna (from syno - hay) means Heudorf and Welsau (from aso. Wel (i) ki - large) as much as large village. Zinna and Welsau are first mentioned in a document in 1251. From 1510 Zinna belonged to the Torgau office. The city of Torgau began growing wine on the Zinnaer Berg in 1518. In 1637 the Zinna Church was destroyed and the place was devastated during the Thirty Years War by troops of the Swedish general Johan Banér . In 1760, during the Seven Years' War in the battle of Torgau on the Süptitzer heights, the place was devastated again. On December 25, 1813, the French occupation of the Torgau Fortress in Welsau surrendered during the Wars of Liberation . In 1850 both places were administratively separated. The Torgau – Pretzsch railway was opened in 1895 and the place received a rail connection. In 1910 the place was connected to the central drinking water network and in 1920 to the electricity supply.
The Fort Zinna housed from 1936 the Nazi Wehrmacht prison Torgau and from 1945 to 1948 the Soviet Special Camp No.. 8 and no. 10 Torgau . Today it is the seat of the Torgau correctional facility .
With effect from January 1, 2013, Zinna was incorporated into Torgau. Welsau also became part of the large district town.
