Welsau is a district of the city of Torgau in the district of North Saxony in Saxony .

Welsau is located northwest of the city limits of the city of Torgau in the transition area between the Elbe lowlands and the hilly Dübener Heide . The federal highway 182 and the disused railway line Pratau – Torgau with a stop lead through the district .

history

Welsau and its place name are of Sorbian origin. Welsau and Zinna were first mentioned in a document in 1251. The place name developed for the street village with 691 hectares in a corridor above Welsowe . From 1510, the higher-level authority always had its seat in Torgau. The population grew from 237 in 1818 to 126 in 1910 and 532 in 1946. On April 25, 1813, the French occupation of Torgau Fortress in Welsau surrendered.

In 1950 the rural community of Welsau was incorporated into the neighboring village of Zinna . After 1945, the farmers had to follow the agricultural path in the Soviet Zone / GDR with land reform and collectivization . Both places were incorporated into the city of Torgau on January 1, 2013 as rural districts.
