Saint-Galmier is a French municipality with 5722 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Loire in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It is located about 20 kilometers north of Saint-Étienne on the banks of the Coise River . Its inhabitants are called Baldomériens .
Saint-Galmier is the administrative center of the canton of Saint-Galmier , which is part of the arrondissement of Montbrison . Historically, it was part of the former Forez Province .
The place is known for its mineral water , which is sold by Danone under the name Badoit . The spring has been used economically since the 18th century. In 1897 it was recognized by the Académie de médecine as a matter of "public interest". The water has the property that it naturally contains carbonic acid .
In addition, there has been a horse racing track (harness racing, sand track) here since 1899 , which was the scene of the cross-country world championships in 2005 .
geography
The Saint-Galmier-Veauche station on the Roanne – Andrézieux railway line, the third railway line in France , has been in the municipality of Veauche since 1832 . This line was later rerouted between Balbigny and Le Coteau and integrated into the Moret-Veneux-les-Sablons-Lyon-Perrache railway .
