Saint-Bonnet-le-Chateau is a French commune with 1,813 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Loire in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the arrondissement of Montbrison and the canton of Saint-Just-Saint-Rambert (until 2015: canton of Saint-Bonnet-le-Château ). The inhabitants are called Cacamerlots or Sambonitains .

Saint-Bonnet-le-Château is located in the historic Forez landscape in the Massif Central . Saint-Bonnet-le-Château is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Luriecq in the north and northeast, La Tourette in the east and southeast and Saint-Nizier-de-Fornas in the south and west.
The former route nationale 498 (today's D498) runs through the municipality .
