Sauvain is a French municipality with 380 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Loire in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Montbrison and the canton of Boën-sur-Lignon .

The municipality is located about 20 kilometers northwest of Montbrison , on the eastern flank of the Monts du Forez mountain range . The Pierre-sur-Haute summit (1631 m), the highest point in the department, is located in the municipality . The Pierre-sur-Haute military radio station is located here .
