Montbrison is a French municipality with 15,641 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Loire in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes ; it is the administrative seat of the arrondissement of Montbrison and the capital of the canton of Montbrison .
geography
Montbrison is on the border with the Forez plain , at the foot of the Monts du Forez, 30 kilometers from Saint-Etienne . The city is crossed by the Vizezy River.
history
The first mention of the place comes from the year 870. Under the Counts of Forez Montbrison became the chief town of the county. During the Hundred Years War the place was fortified. Under King Francis I , Montbrison came to the crown of France.
The first horse-drawn tram in Europe ran from Montbrison to Montrond-les-Bains from 1839 to 1848 (→ Tram Montbrison – Montrond ).
On January 1, 2013, the municipality of Moingt, associated since 1973, was finally incorporated after a referendum. Moingt goes back to a Gallo-Roman seaside resort, Aquae Segetae , from the 1st and 2nd centuries. Remnants of the Roman theater can still be seen.

Attractions
The Gothic collegiate church Notre-Dame-d'Espérance was built between 1223 and 1466 and is a Monument Historique (since 1840) a listed building .
