Christophe Agou

Christophe Agou (born October 14, 1969 in Montbrison ; † September 16, 2015 ) was a French photographer .

biography

Christophe Agou discovered his interest in photography as an autodidact on various trips through Europe and the United States.

He has published his documentary photographs since the 1990s. He switched between black and white and color, landscape and portrait, reportage and documentation. Agou did not commit to any particular style. In the course of time, Agou also opened up other media, such as assemblage and film, whereby he always retained his way of working.

In 1992 he settled in New York . In 1998 he began a series of photos about people in the New York subway , the results of which were published in 1998 under the title Life Below (Quantuck Lane / WW Norton & Co. 2004).

In the winter of 2002, Agou returned to his home region, the Forez , and traveled to areas far from the cities that he already knew. He got to know the people of the countryside and friendships developed from his regular visits. He began his series of photos Face au Silence (Faces of Silence) .

In 2006 he was one of the finalists of the W. Eugene Smith Award and in 2008 one of the finalists of the Prix de la Photographie of the Paris Académie des Beaux-Arts . A year later he received the special jury award at the Prix ​​Kodak de la Critique Photographique and was the winner of the European Publishers Award for Photography 2010.

Christophe Agou's work has been published many times and exhibited internationally, including at MoMa (New York), the Museum of Fine Arts (Houston), the Jeu de Paume (Paris), and the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró (Mallorca) the photo festival Les Rencontres Internationales d'Arles (France), at the Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington DC), at the Noorderlicht Festival (Netherlands) and at various photo festivals in China.

Agou died in September 2015 at the age of 45 from complications from cancer.
