Bellegarde-en-Forez is located about 22 kilometers north-northeast of Saint-Étienne in the historic Forez landscape . The Anzieux flows through the municipality . Bellegarde-en-Forez is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Cyr-les-Vignes in the north, Marignes in the east and north-east, Chazelles-sur-Lyon in the east, Saint-Galmier in the south, Cuzieu in the south-west and Saint-André-le- Puy to the west.
