Wilhelm Friedrich Viktor Stein (born September 5, 1870 in Oldenburg (Oldenburg) , † December 14, 1964 ) was a German engineer and local transport manager.

Life

Wilhelm Stein, son of the secret school councilor Heinrich Stein, attended high school in Oldenburg. After graduating from high school, he studied mechanical engineering and electrical engineering at the Technical University of Hanover and the Technical University of Berlin . In 1888 he became a member of the Corps Hannovera Hannover . In Berlin he joined the Corps Berolina. In 1892 he completed his studies with the government building supervisor exam. He then served as a one-year volunteer with the Oldenburg Infantry Regiment No. 91 . He received his practical training as a government construction manager in the railway service in Elberfeld, Siegen, Düsseldorf and Witten, among others.

After he was appointed government master builder in 1897, he switched to industry and took a position as an engineer at Siemens & Halske AG. In the following year he was sent to a consortium of Siemens & Halske AG and AEG for project planning work and negotiations for the construction of a Hamburg elevated and underground railway. From 1906 to 1914 he directed the construction of this railway. In 1910 he became a board member of Hamburger Hochbahn AG, which was founded to operate the railway . He took part in the First World War as a captain in the Landwehr. Around 1930 he became chairman of the board of the Hamburger Hochbahn, which since 1918 has also included the trams and Alster shipping.

In 1929, Stein became President of the Association of German Transport Administrations , Vice President of the International Association of Trams, Small Railways and Motor Vehicles in Brussels and of the Reich Railway Council. He published articles on urban transport and arbitration in specialist journals.

In 1933 he was prematurely retired by the National Socialists. After the Second World War , he was again chairman of the board for a period of two years and gave decisive impetus for the reconstruction of the route network. He then moved to the supervisory board, to which he belonged until 1953. The "father of the elevated railway" was considered an internationally recognized specialist in the field of local public transport. He was married to Elise Fortmann, with whom he had four daughters.
