Montrond-les-Bains is a commune with 5302 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the Loire department in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . Montrond-les-Bains belongs to the arrondissement of Montbrison and the canton of Andrézieux-Bouthéon . The inhabitants are called Montrondais (es) .
geography
Montrond-les-Bains is located about 22 kilometers northeast of Saint-Étienne in the historic Forez landscape . Here the Anzieux river first flows into the Coise , which then reaches the Loire 150 meters further . Montrond-les-Bains is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Marclopt in the north, Saint-Cyr-les-Vignes in the north-east, Bellegarde-en-Forez in the east, Cuzieu in the south, Unias in the south-west, Boisset-lès-Montrond in the west and Chalain- le-Comtal in the north-west.
The former national routes 82 and 496 passed through the municipality .
Since 1832 the community had a station on the Roanne – Andrézieux railway, the third railway line in France. This line was later integrated into the Moret-Veneux-les-Sablons-Lyon-Perrache railway . In 1939, the Montbrison – Montrond tram started operating as a standard gauge horse-powered tram. The line was closed again in 1848 due to a decline in transport performance. In 1876 the Lyon-Saint-Paul-Montbrison railway was put into operation, the Sainte-Foy-l'Argentière -Montbrison section was closed in the middle of the 20th century . Today the station of trains of the will TER Auvergne Rhône-Alpes of the connection Roanne - Saint-Etienne-Châteaucreux served.
history
The name of the place comes from the castle complex ( castrum montes rondunti ) from the 11th century, which was used by the Counts of Forez until the 18th century . The fortifications were rebuilt from the 16th century. In 1839, the second tram in the world was opened here with the (horse-drawn) Montbrison – Montrond tram (closed in 1848).
