Saint-Médard-en-Forez is located about 18 kilometers north of Saint-Étienne and 43 kilometers west-southwest of Lyon in the historic province of Forez am Coise , which borders the municipality in the north. Saint-Médard-en-Forez is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Chazelles-sur-Lyon in the north and north-east, Chevrières in the east, Aveizieux in the south and south-east, Chambœuf in the south-west and Saint-Galmier in the west and north-west.
