Saint-Cyprien is a French commune with 2,485 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Loire in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the arrondissement of Montbrison and the canton of Saint-Just-Saint-Rambert .

geography

Saint-Cyprien lies in the historic Forez landscape in the Massif Central and is bounded by the Malbief rivers to the west and the Loire , into which the Bonson flows, to the east. Saint-Cyprien is surrounded by the neighboring communities Craintilleux in the north, Veauchette in the north-east, Andrézieux-Bouthéon in the east, Bonson in the south and south-west and Sury-le-Comtal in the west and north-west.

history

There was a camp in Saint-Cyprien that had been set up in early 1939 for refugees from the Spanish Civil War , and which then became a foreigner assembly camp. In March 1939, 90,000 refugees were living in the camp. On December 19, 1940, it was officially closed for “health reasons” and the camp inmates were transferred to Gurs.
