Lavieu is a French village with 116 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Loire in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the arrondissement of Montbrison and the canton of Montbrison (until 2015: canton of Saint-Jean-Soleymieux ).
geography
Lavieu is located about 30 kilometers northwest of Saint-Étienne on the upper reaches of the Mare tributary Curraize . The area around Lavieu, which rises to the west, is part of the historical Forez province , which forms the transition from the Loire Valley to the north-western Massif Central . The districts belong to Lavieu
- La Côte in the northeast,
- Trémolin and
- Beauvoir in the southeast.
The village of Lavieu was created on the south side of a 734 meter high mountain cone. The highest point in the municipality is the 769 meter high Le Suc summit south of the town center. Lavieu is surrounded by the municipalities of Lézigneux in the north, Margerie-Chantagret in the east and south and Chazelles-sur-Lavieu in the west.
history
Lavieu was the seat of a châtellenie , a castellan , in the 11th century . This was subordinate to the Counts of Forez . The castellans or lords of the castle established a noble family, the House of Lavieu . The remains of the castle include a half-collapsed tower and some wall ruins. The earliest records of this castle date back to 970. In 1828 the parish of Saint-Montagne-en- Lavieu was incorporated into Lavieu.
Population development
With 116 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Lavieu is one of the smallest municipalities in the Rhône-Alpes region. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (in 1911 there were still 229 inhabitants), a slight increase in population has been recorded since the late 1960s.

Economy and Infrastructure
There are four farms in the municipality (cultivation of aromatic plants, dairy farming, cattle breeding). There is also a wood processing company and a small service company.
Lavieu is away from the major national transport routes. In the city of Montbrison , ten kilometers away, there are connections to the trunk road network, including a. via the Autoroute A 72 ( A89 - Saint-Étienne ). Trains to Saint-Étienne, Lyon and Clermont-Ferrand leave from Montbrison station .
