The county of Forez was part of the county of Lyon early on and, like it, was controversial between the count and the archbishop of Lyon . It was not until the 12th century that Forez became independent, for which Count Guigues III. 1167 paid homage to the King of France .

From now on, Forez developed its own county administration and jurisdiction. An audit office was established in 1317 . The county grew, especially after the marriage of Count Jean († 1333) with Alix von Viennois . Both son Guigues VIII. († 1356) married Jeanne de Bourbon and thus found connection to the great barons of France.

Anne de Forez, the granddaughter of Guigues VIII and Jeanne de Bourbon, married Duke Ludwig II of Bourbon († 1410) and brought the county of Forez into their marriage.

Forez subsequently stayed with the Bourbon House.
