Willem Slijkhuis
Willem Slijkhuis ( Willem Frederik "Wim" Slijkhuis ; born January 13, 1923 in Leiden , South Holland ; † June 28, 2003 in Badhoevedorp , Haarlemmermeer , North Holland ) was a Dutch medium and long-distance runner who was successful in the late 1940s and early 1950s was.
At the European Championships in Oslo in 1946 , he won the silver medal over 1500 meters behind the British Sydney Wooderson . In 1948 at the Olympic Games in London , in the shadow of his compatriot Fanny Blankers-Koen , he won two bronze medals in the 1500 and 5000 meters . Two years later he became European champion over 1500 meters at the European Championships in Brussels in 1950 . At the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 , he was eliminated over 5000 meters in the run.
Slijkhuis was seen as a stubborn athlete who occasionally clashed with sports officials.
