George Hutson (born December 22, 1889 in Lewes , East Sussex , † September 14, 1914 in France ) was a British athlete who was successful as a long-distance runner in the years before the First World War . He won two Olympic bronze medals.

He started for the Surrey AC.

He was only 24 years old. In 1914 he took part in the Battle of the Marne as a member of the Royal Sussex Regiment and did not return from a deployment on September 14th. His name can be found on the memorial stone in La Ferté-sous-Jouarre , along with around 3800 other names of British soldiers whose graves are not known .

Career

George Hutson won 4 British Championships:

  • 1 mile: 1914 (4: 22.0 min)
  • 4 miles: 1912 (20: 10.8 min), 1913 (19: 32.0 min) and 1914 (19: 41.4 min)

He also took part in the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm with a successful medal .

  • Over 5000 meters he qualified as third of his prelim in 15: 29.0 min for the final, where he met his toughest competitors for the first time - the Finn Hannes Kolehmainen and the French Jean Bouin . Hutson had no chance to intervene in the fight for the gold medal, which Kolehmainen won just ahead of Bouin in the new world record time of 14: 36.6 minutes, but was able to improve his lead performance considerably with 15: 07.6 minutes and took third place secure from the two Americans George Bonhag and Tell Berna .
  • He won another bronze medal in the team run over 3000 meters (a discipline that was only part of the Olympic program in 1912, 1920 and 1924) together with William Cotrill and Cyril Porter . Since the British runners had no opponents in the preliminary fight, where the five teams involved had to compete against each other in pairs, they reached the final without a fight and finished third and last (the USA won over Sweden).
