Dolichos (run)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dolichos or Dolichus ( Greek : Δόλιχος , German : "Long race") was a long-distance run that took place at the 15th Ancient Olympic Games in 720 BC. Was held for the first time. The running distance varied, but was mostly 20 stadiums (3845 meters ) or 24 stadiums (4616 meters). The run was similar to the modern marathon . The start and finish were in the stadium, but the run then led out of the stadium.

The measure also determined the length of the track for chariot races. Half a dolichos was called a diaulus . The 20 or 24 stadiums were calculated to be 187.5 meters.
