Career

Alamirew achieved his first international success in 2010. First, he won the 5000-meter run in June at a smaller athletics meeting in Oordegem. In September he beat the middle-distance runner Silas Kiplagat surprisingly clearly in a 3000 meter run in Milan . With his winning time of 7: 28.82 minutes, he finished second in the world's best list of the year behind his compatriot Tariku Bekele . In October Alamirew won the 4 Mijl van Groningen and the month after that, one second behind Azmeraw Bekele, he finished second at the Great Ethiopian Run in Addis Ababa.

At the beginning of 2011, Alamirew caused a sensation when he ran the 3000 meters in 7: 27.80 minutes in his first indoor race at the Sparkassen-Cup in Stuttgart, beating high-class opponents like Augustine Kiprono Choge and Eliud Kipchoge . It was the fourth fastest 3000 meter time run in the hall. Only Daniel Komen and twice Haile Gebrselassie were ever faster. In his first open air race of the season, Alamirew won the same distance in May at the Qatar Athletic Super Grand Prix in Doha with a time of 7: 27.26 minutes. Three weeks later he was fourth in the 5000 meter run at the FBK Games in Hengelo and increased his personal best to 13: 02.71 minutes.

At the Olympic Games in London 2012 he was twelfth over 5000 meters.
