New Jungfernstieg
The Neue Jungfernstieg in Hamburg is the street laid out on the west bank of the Inner Alster in Neustadt , which leads from Jungfernstieg , corner of Colonnaden , up to the corner of Esplanade / Lombardsbrücke and then ends at the intersection of Alsterglacis / Kennedybrücke .
It crosses under the connecting railway so that the northernmost section is already in Rotherbaum . On its east side, the street has a promenade designed as an avenue. The most striking building on the street is the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten .
history
After the construction of a new city fortification for Hamburg , the old systems were no longer needed and the area around the Inner Alster was considerably redesigned. In this context, the New Jungfernstieg was built in 1827.
Before it was filled up, a tour around the Inner Alster was not possible, as the private gardens of the residents reached to the shore. The required soil was obtained by excavating the esplanade and the Lombard wall.
At that time a branch canal, the so-called Kalkgraben, also opened on the west side of the Inner Alster . Since there was still no cement, lime was needed for construction at that time , which was brought by barges from the former Kalkhof on the site of today's State Opera . After the advent of cement, it became the Große Theaterstraße .
Former Esso building, later HWWA
The Neuer Jungfernstieg 21 building, located at the north end of the street on the corner of the Esplanade, was built as the administration building of Esso AG . For many years the Hamburg World Economic Archive , which emerged from the former colonial institute of the University of Hamburg and later traded under the name HWWA Institute for Economic Research and was one of the leading economic research institutes in Germany, was located here. In 2007 the institute was dissolved: the research area became the HWWI , which is now located in Heimhuder Straße in Rotherbaum . The library and archive area has remained in the building on Neuer Jungfernstieg. Today it belongs to the German Central Library for Economics (ZBW) . The GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies (formerly the German Overseas Institute ) and the Africa Association are also located in the house.
