Jenisch is the name of a widespread merchant family, whose branches had a great influence in Augsburg , Kempten and Memmingen in the 16th and 17th centuries and in Hamburg from the 18th to 20th centuries .

history

The name Jenisch can be traced back to Augsburg in the middle of the 14th century (Bartolomäus Jenisch, born 1349). In Kempten, representatives of an older branch of the family held the office of mayor for several generations from 1646 to 1763. Joachim (1505–1575) was mayor of Augsburg.

One of his grandchildren, Zimbert Jenisch (1587–1645), emigrated to Hamburg, where he married a daughter of the Amsinck merchant family and thus gained access to Hanseatic circles. Jenisch received citizenship of the city of Hamburg in 1618 and together with relatives founded the company Paulus Pütz & Zimbrecht Jenisch , which was soon able to achieve great success in import-export between the White Sea and the Mediterranean . In 1629 he was raised to the imperial nobility, but according to Hamburg practice he did not have the title of nobility (cf. Hanseatic and nobility ). The descendants made marriage alliances with all the influential Hamburg merchant families and repeatedly provided members of the Senate (Paul Jenisch (1680–1745), Emanuel Jenisch (1725–1783), Martin Johann Jenisch the Elder , Martin Johann Jenisch the Younger ).
