Margaretha Elisabeth Jenisch
Margaretha Elisabeth Jenisch (born September 3, 1763 in Hamburg , † August 30, 1832 in Lübeck ) was a German headmistress and patron who founded a private girls' school in Lübeck in the 19th century as a school for the poor .
Margaretha Elisabeth Jenisch came from a respected Hamburg merchant family and grew up after the death of her parents in Hamburg and with her uncle, who later became Lübeck's mayor Johann Philipp Plessing . In his house, she was also cared for for a long time, suffering from paralysis. Her brother and asset manager was the Hamburg councilor Martin Johann Jenisch the elder .
The gratitude for the care received and the desire to create a life's work as a physically handicapped and bedridden woman motivated her to stay in Lübeck and devote herself to the education of girls in need. Between 1803 and 1811, the exact time is uncertain due to the Lübeck French period , she built the free school for poor girls , which soon had 100 or more students. She got the suggestion from a school founded by the Society for the Promotion of Charitable Activities .
The death of her older brother Martin Johann in 1829 moved her to set up a foundation to secure her life's work beyond her own death. The Free School Foundation for Poor Girls ran the school from 1903 with state support from Lübeck until 1923 as a Yenish Free School . The school accepted girls from the age of eight until their confirmation. The inflation had destroyed the money capital of the Free School Foundation. Since then, the foundation has left its property in St.-Annen-Straße to the Hanseatic City of Lübeck. This currently runs a hotel management school there , which is named after the north German gastrosophist Karl Friedrich von Rumohr .
The listed palace-like school building at St.-Annen-Straße 4 has been owned by the foundation since 1872. Before that, it had housed the orthopedic institute of the physician Matthias Ludwig Leithoff since 1821 . The property was first mentioned in a document in 1291 and until the 19th century was owned by several Lübeck patrician and council families, which changed frequently.
