Cornelia (Cora) van Nieuwenhuizen Wijbenga (born Nieuwenhuizen, * 12. June 1963 in Ridderkerk ) is a Dutch politician of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), a right - liberal party.

Since October 26, 2017, she has been Minister for Infrastructure and Water Management in the Rutte III cabinet , succeeding party member Melanie Schultz van Haegen .

Life

Van Nieuwenhuizen was born into a family that belonged to the Dutch Reformed Church . Shortly after her birth, the family moved to the neighboring town of Slikkerveer (also part of the municipality of Ridderkerk), where they lived for a few years and grew up in Harderwijk .

She studied social geography at the University of Utrecht and did postgraduate studies at the Nyenrode University of Economics in Breukelen and at the TIAS School for Business and Society in Tilburg .

From 1994 to 2006 she was a member of the Oisterwijk City Council .

From 2003 to 2007 she was (also) a member of the Provincial States of North Brabant and from 2007 to 2010 a member of the Gedeputeerde States of the same province.

From June 17, 2010 to July 1, 2014 she was a member of the Second Chamber of the States General .

Nieuwenhuizen won the European elections in the Netherlands in 2014 as a member of the European Parliament . There she was Vice-Chair of the Delegation for Relations with India and a member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs. She was a member of parliament until October 2017.

Private

Cora van Nieuwenhuizen is married for the second time and has four children. Her current spouse is Bert Wijbenga , alderman in Rotterdam .

She is a big football fan and has been a member of the fan club of the Dutch football club Feyenoord Rotterdam since around 1987 .
