Gijsbert Hendrik Lamers (born December 15, 1834 in Harderwijk , † June 11, 1903 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch Reformed theologian.

Life

Gijsbert Hendrik was the youngest son of pastor Gijsbert Lamers (* July 24, 1791 in Arnhem; † May 20, 1869 in Harderwijk) and his wife Jeannetta Brans Buddingh (* around 1798 in Elst; † January 9, 1866 in Harderwijk). He completed his education at the high school in his hometown and enrolled on June 10, 1853 at the University of Utrecht . In Utrecht, Herman Johan Royaards and later Bernard ter Haar became teachers of church history, under Hermannus Bouman he completed his knowledge of Latin, his knowledge of the exegesis of the Old and New Testaments and natural theology. Henricus Egbertus Vinke taught him dogmatics as well as biblical theology. Cornelis Willem Opzoomer was particularly influential for the later Orthodox representative of the Dutch Reformed Church . On August 6, 1857, he passed his parish exam in Arnhem and received his doctorate in theology on June 25, 1858 in Utrecht on the subject of Specimen ethico-theologicum de conscientia .

From 1858 he completed his probationary year as an adjunct lecturer at the Mission House in Rotterdam and became pastor in Engwierum on August 29 the following year . In 1861 he became pastor in Scherpenzeel and in 1866 in The Hague . In The Hague, he had given lectures on church history and philosophy at the grammar school there. On July 16, 1874, he was appointed professor of natural and biblical theology and dogmatics at the University of Groningen , which he took up on September 30, 1874 with the speech De wetenschap van den godsdienst en de Christelijke theologie . In 1877 he took over the chair for church history and theological philosophy.

On April 6, 1883, he received a professorship for church history, theological philosophy and early Christian literature from the University of Utrecht, which he followed and took on on June 19, 1883 with the inaugural speech De godsdienst as voorwerp van wijsgeerig onderzoek . He also received the chair for Christian ethics in 1884. In his capacity as a Utrecht university lecturer, he also took part in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1887/88 .

Lamers was a member of several theological associations in his home country, a member of the Society for Dutch Literature in Leiden and was a knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion .

Lamers was married twice. His first marriage was on August 29, 1858 in Harderwijk with Anna Catharina Fijnvandraat (born February 17, 1832 in Harderwijk, † June 2, 1864 in Scherpenzeel), the daughter of the baker Willem Fijnvandraat and his wife Helena van der Meer. There are four children from the marriage. His second marriage was on March 31, 1875 in The Hague with Adriana Kruijt (born August 5, 1828 in The Hague, † August 29, 1903 in Utrecht), the daughter of Arij Kruijt and his wife Maria van Besoyen. The marriage remained childless. From the children we know:

August 10, 1911 in Rotterdam Maria Christina Jansma Van Der Ploeg (born March 19, 1878 in The Hague; † February 9, 1966 in Hilversum)
  • Jeanette Lamers (born October 31, 1862 in Scherpenzeel, † December 17, 1943 in Beilen)
  • Anna Catharina Helena Lamers (born April 16, 1864 in Scherpenzeel, † March 15, 1953 in Utrecht)
