Herman Johan Royaards

Herman Johan Royaards also: Hermann Johann Roijaards (born October 3, 1794 in Utrecht ; † January 2, 1854 ibid) was a Dutch Reformed theologian and church historian.

Life

The youngest son of Hermann Royaards and Johanna Henriette Schorer (born April 11, 1757 in Middelburg, † October 23, 1813 in Utrecht), was baptized on October 12, 1794 in the Utrecht Cathedral. After initially attending the Latin school in Utrecht, he enrolled on December 19, 1810 to study theology at the University of Utrecht . To this end, he attended the lectures of Philipp Wilhelm van Heusde at the philosophical faculty , took part in the wars of liberation as a student in 1815 and returned to his theological studies with his father, Gabriel van Oordt , Jean Henri Pareau and Jodocus Heringa Eliza's zoon . On March 12, 1818, he received his doctorate under his father with the treatise Disputatio inauguralis de altera Pauli ad Corinthios epistola, et observanda in illa apostoli indole et oratione as a doctor of theology.

After he had completed his ecclesiastical examination on May 3 of the same year, he was appointed pastor in Meerkerk on February 14, 1819 . Here he continued his studies and received an honorary award from the Society for the Defense of Christian Worship in The Hague for his work on the Book of Daniel of the Bible. Although he was offered a pastor's office in Schiedam in March 1823, the curators of the University of Utrecht appointed him on April 24, 1823 as extraordinary professor of theology and church history. Here he was supposed to support his father and began the task assigned to him on June 20, 1823 with the introductory speech De hominum gentiumque varietate in Christianae Societatis historia observanda .

After the death of his father on November 3, 1825, he was given the full professorship of theology at the University of Utrecht , which he held on March 3, 1826 with the introductory speech on historical theology De theologia historica cum sacri codicis exegesi rite conjuncta nostris potissimum temporibus in belgio excolenda took over and became academy preacher the same day. In his capacity as a Utrecht university lecturer, he also took part in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1834/35 and 1849/50 . When resigning from his first rectorate, he gave the speech on March 26, 1835 over de godsvrucht onzer voorouders, zigtbaar in de vestiging en handhaving van de republiek der Vereenigde Nederlanden . When he resigned from his second rector's council on March 21, 1850, he pursued the subject of Oratio de commutationis, quam subiit theologia in Nederlandia, saeculo hoc undevicesimo, via et ratione .

Royaards campaigned for the welfare of the poor in diakonia, was an advisory member at Dutch synods twelve times and, during his time, had primarily specialized in church historiography in the Netherlands and canon law. He was a member of domestic and foreign learned societies. For example, the Zealand Society of Sciences in Middelburg, the provincial Utrecht Society for the Arts, member of the Society of Dutch Literature in Leiden in 1826 and member of the Royal Netherlands Institute of Sciences on May 12, 1840 . He also became a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion in 1841 and Commander of the Order of the Oak Crown in 1849 .
