Hermann Royaards (born April 5, 1753 in Zaltbommel , † January 25, 1825 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch Reformed theologian.

Life

The son of the doctor of medicine Albertus Royaards (~ June 3, 1720 in The Hague; † June 16, 1761 in Zaltbommel) and his wife Godefrida Gertrud van Coeverden (* January 4, 1721 in Zaltbommel; † January 6, 1804 ibid) attended the Latin school in his hometown in his youth. In 1774 Royaards began studying medical sciences at the University of Utrecht and switched to studying theological sciences during his training. His initial formative teachers at that time were Christoph Saxe , Johann Friedrich Hennert , Meinard Tydeman the Elder and Carolus Segaar . Under Saxe he had defended the treatise Specimen philologico-criticum de emendandis plurimis veterum scriptorum graecorum locis, ubi et de hecatombis Homerique oceano and published four more tracts in the writings of the society 'Tandem fit surculus arbor'. Finally he also attended the lectures of the oriental languages with Sebald Rau and heard the theological lectures of Frans Burman , Albert Voget , Jacob Albert Vos and Gisbert Bonnet .

In 1777 he became a candidate for the office of preacher, received a pastor's position in Scherpenzeel the following year and in March 1780 became a pastor in Elburg . In December 1780 he took over a pastor's position in Alkmaar , in 1782 he was active in the same function in Middelburg and in 1785 went to The Hague as pastor . Here he became quaestor and librarian of the 1785 Hague Society for the Defense of the Christian Religion. As early as 1780 he was considered for a theological professorship at the University of Harderwijk, but this failed. On April 21, 1788 the curators of the Utrecht University appointed him professor of theology, for which he was appointed doctor of theology by Sebald Rau on June 11, 1788 and he began the task assigned to him on June 12, 1788 with the introductory speech, qua Deus in patefacienda religione, usus sit on. From October 16, 1815 to November 6, 1815, he experienced a short period of vacancy in this position.

In his capacity as a Utrecht university lecturer, he also participated in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the alma mater in 1791/92, 1802/03, 1819/20 . In addition, he was chairman of the Dutch Mission Society from 1798 and an advisory member of the committee for the approval of scriptures of the first synod of the Reformed General Church in The Hague in 1816. In his lectures he devoted himself to learning an analytical method of preaching, dogmatically he paid great attention to exegesis. Especially from the study of the Greek and Hebrew languages, he examined the writings of the Old and New Testaments. In his theological view he was an opponent of rationalism. He retired on June 16, 1823 and was buried in the Jacobi Church in Utrecht after his death. In literary terms, he made a few speeches.
