Sebald Rau (also: Sebastianus Ravius ; * October 4, 1724 in Herborn ; † January 10, 1818 in Utrecht ) was a German oriental philologist and Reformed theologian.

Life

The son of the theology professor at the grammar school Herborn Johann Eberhard Rau (born July 16, 1695 in Allenbach; † May 24, 1770 in Herborn) and Augusta Catharina, daughter of the theology professor in Herborn Johann Sebald Hamel (born November 2, 1662 in Büdingen; † July 4, 1722 in Herborn) and Marie Christine Geisweid, had completed his training in his hometown. Here he came under the supervision of his father among the candidates of theology. Rau's studies in Herborn dealt with literature, the oriental languages, Jewish antiquity, the Arabic language and church history.

In 1749 he became lecturer for oriental languages ​​at the University of Utrecht and on January 19, 1750 the curators of the university appointed him extraordinary professor for oriental languages, which he held on March 2, 1750 with the treatise De monumentis veteris ecclesiae orientalis deque usu, quem adferunt theologo linguarum perito . On February 8, 1752 he was appointed full professor of oriental languages, which task he took on on April 27, 1752 with the treatise De eloquentia et sublimitate dictionis Hebraicae scriptorum antiqui foederis .

After receiving an honorary doctorate from the theological faculty on February 11, 1761, in 1765 he became librarian at the Utrecht University Library. On May 6, 1771, he moved to the theological faculty, where he continued to hold the chair of oriental languages ​​and the chair of theological forms and exegesis. He also took part in the organizational tasks of the Utrecht University and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1753/54, 1769/70, 1786/87 and 1804/05 . After he retired on May 1, 1810, he occasionally participated in the Utrecht university business by giving guest lectures.

Rau was married twice. His first marriage was on April 25, 1753 in Schiedam with Cornelia Sara († November 5, 1754), the daughter of councilor and mayor N. Mispelboon. The daughter Johanna Augusta comes from this marriage. From his second marriage, which he was on August 8, 1758 with Susanna Sabina, the daughter of the Amsterdam preacher Tiberius Reytsma (* February 16, 1689 in Nyega / Frießland; † July 1, 1742 in Amsterdam) and his wife Magdalena Hendrietta Baalde (* Amsterdam), were the sons Tiberius Heinrich (born August 25, 1759 in Utrecht) and the professor of theology at the University of Leiden Sebald Fulco Johannes Rau (born October 16, 1765 in Utrecht; † December 1, 1807 in Leiden) and the daughters Magdalena Henrietta (married Eßler), Constantia Elizabeth Rau and Maria Johanna Rau known.
