Johann Eberhard Rau
Johann Eberhard Rau ( pseudonym Ian. Verrius Bassanensis ) (born July 16, 1695 in Allenbach near Hilchenbach , † May 24, 1770 in Herborn ) was a German Protestant theologian and university professor .

family
Johann Eberhard Rau was married; of his children are known by name:
- Sebald Rau , oriental philologist and reformed theologian ; his son Sebald Fulco Johannes Rau later became a Dutch poet , orientalist and Reformed theologian;
- Kunigunde Rau († April 29, 1789 in Herborn), married to Johann Hermann (1729–1780), son of the rector of the high school Ernst Alexander Otto Cornelius Pagenstecher , pastor in Bergebersbach , Freudenberg and Haiger .
education
At the age of ten, his mother initially let him attend the Latin school (today: Gymnasium Am Löhrtor ) in Siegen, which was then run by the rector Johann Georg Bellersheim (1680–1738). After graduation he went to the high school in Herborn in 1713 ; his teachers there included Johann von Hamm (1682–1759), who taught philosophy and oriental languages, and Johann Matthias Florin , who taught rhetoric and history . He then began studying philosophy and theology at the University of Marburg and heard lectures from Johann Hermann Schmincke , professor of history and eloquence. In order to be able to learn the oriental languages better, he took private lessons from Johann Joachim Schröder , where he also heard church history . He also heard lectures on Jewish antiquity with Johann Heinrich Hottinger the Younger (1681–1750), Cartesian philosophy with Georg Otho , theology lectures with Bernhard Duising (1673–1735) and Johann Siegmund Kirchmayer , and the beginnings of arithmetic with Christian Wolff . For three years he also took classes in rabbinism and the Talmud with the rabbis employed by the University of Marburg . He also learned French and Italian.
On June 11, 1717, he finished his studies with his dissertation de precibus Hebraeorum and returned to Herborn to listen to some theological lectures by Abraham Pungeler, Johann Sebald Hamel and Johann Heinrich Schramm .
Career
In 1721 he was appointed professor of theology as well as the Greek and Hebrew languages at the Herborn High School; During his opening speech, Prince Wilhelm II was present with his entire court .
In 1731 he was appointed full third professor and in 1754 full first professor of theology. In 1730 and 1731 he was Rector of the High School and in 1753 and 1754 Vice Rector (the title Rector was held by Prince of Orange William IV , who was also Prince of Nassau-Dillenburg , from 1748 ).
In 1746 he received a call to the University of Frankfurt an der Oder , but the government in Herborn was able to keep him at the high school by increasing the salary and being appointed senior consistorial councilor of the Principality of Nassau-Dillenburg .
His students included Johann Friedrich Fuchs (1739–1823).
Writing
Johann Eberhard Rau was active as a writer in the field of philosophy and Hebrew antiquities, including his work Theses philos. Controversae in principia Ren. Cartesii with the philosophy of René Descartes . Under his pseudonym Ian. Verrius Bassanensis he published Examen iuris canon. et praxis fori eccles. protestantium in causis raptus et affinibus .
In his treatise Monumenta vetustatis Germanicae ut puta de Ara Ubiorum in CC Tacitii Annalium libri duo tum de Tumulo honorario Caii et Lucii Cæsarum in confinio Ubiorum ac Treverorum liber singularis cum figuris aeri incisis , he describes the Roman settlement Icorigium Ara in 1738 and made the suggestion moving to the right bank of the Rhine later revoked this.
His most important and extensive work is Hadriani Relandi antiq, published in 1743 . sacrae veterum Hebraeorum notas et animadversiones adi. JE Rovius .
In 1746 he published refutation of JC Edelmann's creed, a reckless freethinker and religious mocker, to refute the theses of Johann Christian Edelmann .
