The town hall of Querfurt is a monument in the city of Querfurt in the Saalekreis in Saxony-Anhalt .

Location and history

On the north side of the market square of Querfurt is the town hall, which was built at the beginning of the 16th century, but in its current form is strongly influenced by a renovation by Gottfried Weichelt in 1698. During this renovation, as a result of several city fires in the 17th century, the six-storey archive tower with rustikaportal, arched arbor, tail hood and lantern was also built south of the town hall, which characterizes the square to this day and bears the year 1701 in its roof flag. A separate tower keeper lived in the tower until 1945, as Johannes Schlaf reports in his Dingsda stories.

The actual town hall housed the Stadtwaage, Ratstinkstube and Bürgersaal, and in 1738 the archive was installed. An extension from around 1900 is located in the northeast of the building. The building, which is characterized by renaissance and baroque, has stepped gables, a roof lantern and various types of dormer windows. It is under monument protection and is recorded in the monument register with the number 094 05975.

Monuments and installations

On the town hall there is a pointer clock with Roman numerals, a sundial and a donkey's head on the east side, alluding to a legend about Saint Brun von Querfurt . In addition, a commemorative plaque for so-called March victims was placed on the market side, but it also reminds a concentration camp inmate who tragically died. In 2014, a memorial fountain was built on the west side, which is based on the one hand on the Braunsbrunnen in the north-west of the city and on the other hand represents a monument to St. Brun von Querfurt.
