Life

Meinard Tydeman (1824)

The son of Hendrik Willem Tydeman and Johanna Onkruidt had attended the Latin school in his hometown and continued his education at the Athanaeum Gymnasium in Deventer . In 1757 he began studying law at the University of Utrecht . Here he was a student of Petrus Wesseling (1692–1764), Christoph Saxe (1714–1806), Jacobus Voorda (1698–1768) and Friedrich Gottfried Houck (1708–1767). Together with other students, he had set up the Dulces ante omnia Musae , an association devoted to linguistics. In 1762 he had under Wesseling with the treatise de Lucii Ulpii Marcelli Jcti vita et scriptis , which is also known in Germany, doctorate under Wesseling to the doctor of law.

Then he went to teach at the Erasmus Gymnasium in Rotterdam . Here he had shown a lucky hand and in 1763 he was appointed rector of the grammar school in Leeuwarden , which he took up with the Oratio de copulanda literarum ac morum elegantia . He was also noticed at the University of Harderwijk , where in November 1764 he was appointed professor of history, rhetoric and Greek literature. He followed this call on February 22, 1765 with the speech Oratio adit. de necessario Historiarum, Eloquentiae, Graecique . However, he did not stay long in this position because he was offered a professorship of natural law and the German-Roman law at the University of Utrecht on 28 July 1766 in which he did in September 1766 with the speech Oratio de finibus jurisprudentiae naturalis regundis was introduced .

Tydeman was 1770-1771 and 1783-1784 rector of the Utrecht Alma Mater . The next twenty years of residence were the most fruitful and happiest creative phase of his life. Here he had, among other things, obtained an esteemed edition of de Jure Belli et Pacis by Hugo Grotius (1783) and wrote the Quaestiones et Aphorismi ex Jurisprudents naturali and an Enchiridium studiosi jurisprudentiae . After he had held the professorship for 20 years, he resigned it on May 7th due to the spirit that ruled Utrecht in 1787. He inaugurated these causes in Oratio's speech . de caussis quibusdam corrup. tae jurisprudentiae that he had held in Harderwijk, where he had declined as a professor of law.

In 1790 he was appointed chancellor of the province of Overijssel , which position he resigned in 1795. Because he moved to Kampen , where he carried out further studies. In 1801 he went to Leiden, where he created a directory catalog as librarian at the university library there, which appeared in 1802 under the title honoris causa . Since his work in Leiden was continued again and again, he was able to receive a professorship at the University of Leiden in 1814 , where he has since given lectures on Roman antiquities. He continued this until shortly before the end of his life. Tydeman had also appeared as a poet.
