Nicolaas Christiaan Kist (born April 11, 1793 in Zaltbommel , † December 21, 1859 in Leiden ) was a Dutch Reformed theologian and church historian.

Life

The son of pastor Joost Gerard Kist (born August 12, 1756 in Woerden; † January 25, 1815 in Zaltbommel) and Syburgh Henrika Royaards (born August 6, 1758 in Zaltbommel; † November 2, 1829), had the Latin school in his hometown visited. He then studied at the University of Utrecht , where he matriculated on February 15, 1811. Here Jean Henri Pareau , Cornelis Willem de Rhoer , Jodocus Heringa Eliza's zoon , Philipp Wilhelm van Heusde and his uncle Hermann Royaards became his formative teachers. In 1815 he took part in a company of volunteer hunters in the liberation of his fatherland against Napoleon. He returned to Utrecht on October 12, 1815, became a candidate for literature on June 11, 1816 and a candidate for theology on June 13, 1817. In Utrecht he received his doctorate in theology on March 13, 1818 with the treatise De commutatione quam Constantino Magno auctore societas subiit christiana (Utrecht 1818).

On September 13, 1818 he became pastor in Zoelen . On May 2, 1823, he was appointed associate professor of theology at the University of Leiden, with a teaching position for church history and the history of Christian teachings. After he said goodbye to his community in Zoelen on October 26, 1823, he began his teaching post in Leiden on October 11, 1823 with the speech De progressione ingenii humani in dogmatum historia Christianorum animadvertenda . On September 22, 1827, he was also an academy preacher in Leiden. On June 13, 1829 he was appointed full professor of theology in Leiden, which extended task he took over on December 15, 1829 with the speech De Ecclesia Graeca, Divinae Providentiae teste . Kist also took part in the organizational tasks of the Leiden University and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1836/37 and in 1851/52 .

His work moved primarily in the field of church history and reflected biographies of deceased intellectual greats in the Netherlands. Above all, he worked on the multi-volume work of the Archive for Dutch Church History (Leiden 1841–1849, 9th vol.), The New Archive for Church History of the Netherlands (Leiden 1852, 54, 2nd vol.) And the Church History Archive (Amsterdam 1857 –1859) is to be emphasized.
