Purwokerto is a city in Indonesia on the island of Java with about 250,000 inhabitants (as of 2005). It is the capital of Banyumas County in Central Java Province .
The foothills of the city are located a few kilometers south of the active 3428 m high volcano Slamet . Further south, the Serayu River continues to flow into the Indian Ocean .
On December 16, 1895, during the Dutch colonial era , Priyayi Bank was founded in Purwokerto , a predecessor of Bank Rakyat Indonesia .
The majority of the population professes Islam . Nevertheless, the city is the seat of the diocese of the same name Purwokerto , although the Christian make up only a fraction of the population.
The University of Jenderal Soedirman is the largest university in Purwokerto.
The city is connected to the island's rail network between the capital Jakarta and Yogyakarta . The Purwokerto Airport is located about 18 kilometers west, the Tunggul Wulung Airport , the city of Cilacap operated, 33 kilometers south-west.
A central bus station serves connections by bus to larger cities further away. Bemos and ojeks drive within the surrounding area .
