life and career

She was born as the daughter of Hans T. Theilade (1886–1965) and Joanna Catarina Theilade (1885–1941) in the colony of the Dutch East Indies , but the family soon moved back to their native Denmark. Her talent was discovered early on, and she was trained by the Russian ballerina Lubov Egorova in Paris. She appeared in pieces with stars such as Anna Pavlova and Sergei Lifar . At the age of 16 she was seen as a prima ballerina with corresponding solo scenes on the most important stages in Europe, including the Royal Danish Theater . Theilade performed in the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, France, Switzerland, Sweden, Finland and the United States, among others. In 1931 she met Max Reinhardt , who she cast in the theater productions Hoffmanns Erzählungen and Die Schöne Helena . In 1933 she had an appearance in the German film The Big Bluff with Theo Lingen .

In the USA in 1935 Reinhardt and Theilade worked together again with the lavish Shakespeare film A Midsummer Night's Dream . In the supporting role of a fairy she danced several remarkable solo dances and choreographies in the film, which had been developed by Bronislava Nijinska . From 1938 to 1940 she danced with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo under the direction of Léonide Massine , which performed at the Metropolitan Opera , among others . Theilade performed in Brazil in the early 1940s. In the following decades Theilade mainly worked as a ballet teacher and developed her own choreographies, for example for César Franck's Psyche or Robert Schumann's Concerto . From the 1950s she worked mainly in Denmark, including at the Danish State Theater . She also produced one of the first television ballets in 1965. She worked as a ballet teacher at the Odense Teater up to the age of around 95 and performed sporadically at ballet until a few years before her death. Most recently she was particularly popular as an interviewee.

In 2006 Lone Kühlmann published the biography Nini Theilade - Dansen var det hele værd . Nini Theilade was married twice, with Peter Loopuyt from 1940 until his death in 1965 and with Arne Buchter-Larsen from 1967 until his death in 1987. She died in February 2018 at the age of 102.
