Starogard Gdański railway accident
In the railway accident at Starogard Gdański on May 1, 1925, the D 4 from Eydtkuhnen to Berlin-Charlottenburg between Swarożyn and Prussian Stargard on Polish territory derailed . 29 people died.
Starting position
The D 4 was a train of corridor traffic between the enclave Prussia and the main area of the German Reich .
the accident
The D 4 derailed and part of the train fell down an approximately 8-meter-high embankment. The course of the accident remained unclear:
The Polish side claimed that the derailment was the result of an attack. According to the applicable regulations, the Polish railways were not liable in the event of force majeure - and this included attacks on railway facilities. The Polish side could never prove the alleged attack - for example, a perpetrator was never arrested.
The German side claimed, however, that the train had derailed due to defects in the superstructure , but could not prove that either. Germany applied to the Danzig Permanent Court of Arbitration for an inspection of the accident site. This took place on May 12, 1925 and essentially showed that the section was in perfect condition.
consequences
29 dead, 10 seriously and 23 slightly injured were the result of the derailment.
