The Serayu ( Javanese Kali Serayu , Indonesian Sungai Serayu ) is a 180 kilometer long river on the Indonesian island of Java . It rises on the northwest flank of the Prahu volcano , in the Dieng Plateau , and flows into the Indian Ocean near the city of Cilacap .
The Serayu has eleven tributaries , the largest being Begaluh, Merawu, Klawing and Logawa. The water is used to irrigate fields, for drinking water or to generate electricity , among other things . The Panglima Besar Sudirman dam project was built in 1983 near the town of Banjarnegara on the upper reaches. The reservoir extends over an area of around ten square kilometers. The hydropower plant has an output of 180 MW.
The catchment area with an area of 4375 square kilometers is located in the province of Central Java and extends over the five administrative districts of Wonosobo , Purbalingga , Banjarnegara , Banyumas and Cilacap . The largest city is Purwokerto with about 250,000 inhabitants.
The area is surrounded by several volcanoes. On the eastern side are the Dieng Plateau , with the headwaters, as well as the Sundoro and Sumbing , both over 3000 m high. The Slamet , the second highest volcano in Indonesia, located less than 50 kilometers north of the estuary. There is the headwaters of the Logawa tributary.
