Cornelis Willem de Rhoer

Cornelis Willem de Rhoer (also: Cornelius Wilhelm de Rhör ; born September 26, 1751 in Deventer , † January 15, 1821 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch historian, rhetorician, philologist and legal scholar.

Life

The son of Jacob de Rhoer the Elder had attended the Athaneum grammar school in his hometown and, after his father had been appointed to the University of Groningen , he had entered the register of that college free of charge on January 11, 1768. Here he completed his philosophical studies with Leonhard Offerhaus (1699–1779), Friedrich Adam Widder (1724–1787) and Dionysius van de Wijnpersse (1724–1808). However, he wanted to study law above all. Therefore he attended the lectures of Friedrich Adolf van der Marck (1719–1800), Ludwig Konrad Schroeder (1724–1801), Dionysius Godefridus van der Keessel (1738–1816) and Hermann Cannegieter (1723–1804).

With van der Kessel, he moved to the University of Leiden in 1771 , where Friedrich Wilhelm Pestel (1724–1805) accompanied his training. Returned to Groningen, he earned the academic title of Doctor of Law in 1773. Then he became a lawyer in Groningen. In 1777 the University of Harderwijk appointed him professor of history, rhetoric and the Greek language. In 1784 he became a professor of Dutch history.

After he had also been rector of the Alma Mater in 1781 and 1791, he took over the professorship of nature, international and constitutional law at the Harderwijk University in 1791 and in 1795 he became professor of Dutch constitutional law. In 1797 he received a call as a professor at the law faculty of the University of Utrecht , which office he took on March 7, 1798. Here he worked until the end of his life and was rector of the Utrecht alma mater in 1801/02 . In 1820 in the Netherlands he had paved the way for a pragmatic and philosophical treatment of history, using the writings of Voltaire , Montesquieu , Humes and Gibbon as a guide.
