Jodocus Heringa Eliza's zoon

Jodocus Heringa Eliza's zoon (born October 14, 1765 in Gorredijk , † January 18, 1840 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch Reformed theologian.

Life

The son of the surgeon Eliza Heringa, who later became physician general in Leeuwarden , and his wife Jahnke Halbertsma, had attended the Latin school in Groningen when he was ten. After he had passed through different classes in four years, he was enrolled at the University of Groningen on March 9, 1780 at the age of fifteen. Here he was inspired by his uncle Johannes Heringa (1733-1816) and aimed at the theological sciences. For this purpose he completed the necessary basics with Johannes Ruardi (1746–1815) in the Latin and Greek languages and with Nikolaus Wilhelm Schröder (1721–1798) in the Hebrew and Arabic languages.

After he had made sufficient progress, he turned to the study of theology, for which he attended the lectures of Paulus Chevallier (1722–1795), Gerardus Kuijpers (1722–1798), Theodorus Lubbers (1731–1804) and Petrus Abresch . Under Abresch, he had defended the treatise philologici-theologica de formula baptismi on December 7, 1785 and received a ministry in Nijkerk on October 8, 1786 . On December 11, 1791 he became pastor in Vlissingen . From there, the curators of the University of Utrecht appointed him professor of theology on January 13, 1794 and, connected to that, a pastor's position in Utrecht.

For this purpose, he received his doctorate in theology from Hermann Royaards on April 2, 1794 and he took up the office assigned to him on June 5, 1794 with the speech de theologiae in scholis institutione ad praesentem reipublicae christianae conditionem prudenter accommodanda . On the other hand, he began his pastoral service with a discourse on John XVI; 8-11 . After he had rejected appointments to the Athenaeum Illustre in Amsterdam and to the University of Leiden , he was also given the professorship of natural and Christian theology on December 11, 1797, which he exchanged for the professorship of explanations of the New Testament on April 22, 1799.

He also participated in the organizational tasks of the university. In 1798/99 he held the rector's office of the Alma Mater for the first time , which he resigned with a speech on the New Testament. The French occupation made his term of office from 1811 particularly difficult. However, with a lot of effort, he was able to maneuver the university through all the dangers of that time until 1816. Even a cessation of teaching from October 16, 1815 to November 6, 1815 could be overcome, as his farewell speech de rebus, quae Academiae Rheno-Trajectinae, ipso Rectore, acciderunt, prosperis et adversis, held on March 26, 1816 explains.

After he was rector of the alma mater for the third time in 1824/25, he left his university teaching post as emeritus in 1835, but remained a professor at the university until the end of his life. Heringa had been a member of the Dutch Society of Sciences in Haarlem since 1797 and a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences (KNAW) since 1827 . When Heringa took office in Utrecht, he tried to make the terminology of dogmatics more biblical. It was close to his heart to raise a better humanity in the spirit of biblical philosophy.

Heringa was married twice. His first marriage was on June 3, 1787 with Geertruida Wolvega (1767–1797). His second marriage was on April 28, 1803 with Clara Judit Nagel (1759-1825). His sons Konrad Heringa (1790–1869) and Eliza Heringa (1795–1861) also became theologians.
