Life

The son of pastor Luttonius Bouman (born January 2, 1751 in Midlum; † June 14, 1836 in Harderwijk) and Lucretia Welmina van der Swaagh (born March 18, 1762 in Appingedam; † June 22, 1834 in Harderwijk), visited the Schools in Harderwijk and Elburg. Then he attended the Velavicum high school in Harderwijk with Gerardus Knoop and Jan ten Brink . In 1804 he began to study theology at the University of Harderwijk , where Jean Henri Pareau , Bernardus Nieuhoff (1747-1831), Johann Clarisse and Annaeus Ypeij (1760-1837) were his formative teachers. On September 20, 1812 he took over a pastor's position in Oostermeer and in 1815 switched to a pastor's position in Finsterwolde near Groningen.

On October 22, 1822, he was appointed professor of theology at the University of Utrecht . In Utrecht he received an honorary doctorate in theology on May 13, 1823, and took up the professorship assigned to him on May 20, 1823 with the inaugural speech De Belgio, disciplinae theologicae, nostra imprimis aetate, sede pulcherrima et maxime opportuna . On June 1 of the same year he became the pastor of the academy in Utrecht. He initially taught natural theology, as well as the exegesis and criticism of the New Testament, and later followed his lectures on the exegesis of the Old Testament, but also on theological encyclopedia. After Pareau's death, he took over the lectures in Arabic languages ​​and literature.

Bouman also took part in the organizational tasks of the college. He was rector of the Alma Mater in 1829/30 and 1844/45 .
