Johann Clarisse

Johann Clarisse (born October 19, 1770 in Schiedam , † November 29, 1846 in Rheden ) was a Dutch Reformed theologian .

Life

The son of Johannes Clarisse and Elselina Elisabetha van der Duiff lost his mother at an early age. His mother-in-law, the daughter of the mayor in Schiedam, Thomas Pigeaud, became his new reference person. From 1782 he attended the Latin school in his hometown, from 1785 the Latin school in Haastrecht . From 1787 he studied Protestant theology at the University of Leiden , 1789 at the University of Utrecht and obtained his doctorate in theology in 1791 . In 1792 he entered the church service as a preacher in Doorn and from 1797 worked in the same capacity in Enkhuizen . At the last place he began to draw attention to himself with some theological writings in which he went into the modern synthetic methods of the Enlightenment.

Even in his youth, his spirit was kindled for everything “beautiful and big”. He celebrated Friedrich Schiller , who at that time had not yet reached his full height, and orientated himself with zeal to the products of taste and learning of the older and newer peoples. His extensive theological knowledge earned him a professorship at Harderwijk University in 1803 , where he took up his post with a speech on the indissoluble bond between the doctrines and moral teachings of the Gospel . In 1804 he was appointed to a professorship in theology according to Franeker and a professorship in philosophy in Groningen . However, he decided not to leave Harderwijk and was rector of the Harderwijk College in 1805 .

This was inevitably the case when Napoleon destroyed the two universities in Harderwijk and Franeker in 1811 with a stroke of the pen. Shortly thereafter, Clarisse's talents as a preacher brought him a call to Amsterdam, where he stayed until 1815 and then went to Leiden as professor of theology. Here he gave his inaugural address de theologo vere liberali . He lectured on morality and exegesis , preaching, natural theology and encyclopedia . After the death of Sebald Justinus Brugmans , the university's curators gave him the chair of natural history until Kaspar Georg Karl Reinwardt returned . In 1821/22 he was rector of the Alma Mater and in 1840 retired from his position as a university lecturer when he retired. He moved to Rheden in 1841, where he died.
