Bernard ter Haar

Bernard ter Haar (born June 13, 1806 in Amsterdam , † November 19, 1880 in Velp ) was a Dutch Reformed theologian, church historian and poet.

Life

Bernard was the son of the merchant Barend ter Haar (born June 23, 1766 in Amsterdam; † July 11, 1828 ibid) and his wife Johanna Judith Hamming (born September 12, 1787 in Arnhem; † November 29, 1843 in Amsterdam). After attending the French school and, from the age of twelve, the Latin school in his hometown, ter Haar frequented the Athenaum Illustre there from 1823 . After answering a Latin prize question from the University of Groningen with the treatise Commentatio de Heraclidarum Incursionibus in Peloponesum earumque causis atque effectibus and receiving a golden honorary award for it, ter Haar enrolled on June 8, 1826 to study theology and literary studies at the University of Leiden . His formative teachers were Johann Clarisse , Johannes van Voorst , Johannes Henricus van der Palm , Nicolaas Christiaan Kist and Wessel Albertus van Hengel . In August 1829 he was approved as a pastor of the Reformed Church of the Netherlands .

He found his first pastoral position in Emnes , where he took over the office on May 23, 1830 with an inaugural sermon on the Gospel according to John (chapter 12, verse 50). He stayed there for almost three years and said goodbye to the local community on March 6, 1833 with a farewell sermon on Paul's second letter to the Thessalonians (chap. 2, verses 16 & 17). On March 17th of the same year he took up a parish office in Vlaardingen with the inaugural sermon on the Gospel according to John (chapter 17, verse 17). Two years later, on May 10, 1835, he retired from this congregation with a sermon on the Epistle to Philemon (4, 1b) and found in Arnhem a new workplace, where he on 24 May 1835 his inaugural sermon on the Epistle to the Ephesians (2, 20b). He left the Arnhem position after three years, because as early as 1837 he had received calls as pastor in Leiden and Dortrecht and on November 4, 1838 he gave the farewell sermon on Paul's second letter to the Corinthians (13, 11).

He began his new assignment on November 18 of the same year in Leiden with a sermon on Paul's first letter to the Corinthians (1: 2). He stayed there for almost five years, received an honorary doctorate in theology from the University of Leiden on February 2, 1839, and left the Leiden congregation on July 16, 1843 with a sermon on Paul's letter to the Ephesians (3, 14-21). He took up his last ministerial office on August 2 of the year with the introductory sermon on Paul's first letter to the Corinthians (3, 9c). When in 1853 the Thorbecke I cabinet tried to separate state and church and wanted to introduce religious freedom, a movement against it formed. The representatives of this movement resisted that in the Calvinistic Netherlands a restoration of the episcopal hierarchy by Pope Pius IX. should be realized. To this end, he represented the movement on April 15, 1853 with a speech to King Wilhelm III . As a result, the Thorbecke cabinet was dissolved.

On March 2, 1854, he was appointed professor of church history and ecclesiastical ethics at the University of Utrecht . Ter Haar therefore gave up his last pastor on June 11, 1854 with a sermon on Paul's second letter to Timothy (2, 19), and on June 16 of that year he gave his inaugural address De historiae eclesiasticae et theologiae moralis studio, his maxime , diebus arcte conjungendo and took up his post on June 23. In his capacity as a Utrecht university lecturer, he also took part in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the Alma Mater from 1859-1860 . As a church historian, his work Geschiedenis der Kerkhervorming in Tafereelen should be emphasized, which saw several editions. He has also made a name for himself as a poet. His pastoral poetry described in a vivid way and showed a passionate love for nature. For today's readers, however, it seems boring and sometimes shrill. His poetics certainly had a certain edifying effect on the people of his time, but also shows a certain conservative naivete.

Haar became a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences , the Dutch Literature Society in Leiden and head of the Society for the Defense of Christian Worship in The Hague. In 1849 he became a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lions , and in 1876 he became the commander of the same award and in 1879 the Commander of the Order of the Oak Crown . On December 17, 1874 he said goodbye to his students and was retired on January 1, 1875.

In the last years of his life he moved to Velp, where his body was buried in the Rozendaal cemetery.
