Petrus Johannes van Harderwijk (born July 1, 1867 in Utrecht , † December 23, 1948 in Rijswijk , South Holland ) was a Dutch Old Catholic clergyman and publicist.

Life

Born as the son of the goldsmith Petrus Johannes van Harderwijk and his wife Barbara Johanna Gol, he was admitted to the Old Catholic seminary in Amersfoort in 1880 , where he witnessed the change from a Latin school to a grammar school . Here he passed the Abitur in 1886 and then studied Old Catholic theology. As a student in Amersfoort, he experienced the establishment of the Utrecht Union of Old Catholic Churches in 1889 , which freed the Roomsch Katholieke Kerk van de Oud-Bisschoppelijke Cleresie from its isolation and came into contact with Old Catholic churches outside the Netherlands. He was able to take part in courses given by Old Catholic university teachers at the University of Bonn . In the library of the seminary he helped catalog pamphlets (so-called varia ), which offer a vivid picture of the religious dispute in the 17th and 18th centuries. Through his editorial work at Amersfoortsche Courant , he laid the foundation for his later journalistic activities.

On 26 November 1893 he received by Archbishop Gerardus Gul , the ordination . He was appointed pastor in Schiedam , where he remained until December 31, 1937. Here he got to know serious social problems, some of which were caused by the many distilleries. In this context his work for the creation of an independent household and industrial school should be mentioned.

Act

His most important task besides the parish office was the church press. In 1913 he was appointed to the editorial board of De Oud-Katholiek magazine and from 1918 to 1946 he was its editor-in-chief. He was also chairman of a committee for the inventory of church goods of particular historical and art-historical interest.
