Heeckeren
Heeckeren (also Heekeren or Hekeren ) is the name of a noble family from the Duchy of Geldern .
history
The most famous of the Lords van Heeckeren was Friedrich (circa 1295–1357), Lord of the Ehze, an estate that is about ten kilometers east of Zutphen in what is now Gorssel . Friedrich was councilor of Duke Rainald II. In 1348 he got at war with Gysbrecht van Bronkhorst because of certain hunting and other rights. He made an alliance with Johann von Arkel , Bishop of Utrecht . Gysbrecht van Bronkhorst, however, allied himself with Duke Rainald. Since his successor, Rainald III. , fearing a hegemony of the Bronkhorsters, he took the side of Heeckeren. This was the beginning of a conflict that dragged on for decades. The Dutch noble family van Voorst and the Counts of Rechteren-Limpurg descend from him.
Today's noble family with the name van Heeckeren descends from Jacob van Heker , Mr. van Roderlo, who died in 1440. This ancestor probably descended from older namesake van Heeckeren, but the ancestry has not yet been proven. Willem van Heeckeren van Kell (1815-1914), who was Dutch Foreign Minister from 1858 to 1860 , belonged to this younger generation .
The Twickel Castle near Delden passed from the Van Wassenaer family to Van Heeckeren van Kell, who transferred it to a foundation in 1953; the foundation is now administered by the Counts of Castell-Rüdenhausen .
coat of arms
Like the von Rechteren family, the Heeckerens had a red cross on a gold background in their coat of arms .
