Van Voorst tot Voorst is the name of an ancient noble family from today's Dutch province of Overijssel .
history
The first bearer of the name, Herman van Voorst , was announced in 1252. The name probably comes from his castle Kasteel Voorst, which was destroyed in 1363 by the prince-bishop of Utrecht , Jan van Arkel . During this time, the Van Voorst family of robber barons was involved in long-lasting conflicts with the IJssel towns.
In the male line, today's Van Voorst tot Voorst family descends from the knight Evert van Heeckeren, who was named between 1231 and 1245 . When his descendant Frederik van Heeckeren van der Eze († 1386) married Lutgardis van Voorst, the name Van Voorst came back to the Van Voorst tot Voorst family. The Counts of Rechteren-Limpurg also descend from the male line of Frederik van Heeckeren van der Eze.
During the period of the Republic of the United Provinces of the Netherlands, the majority of the Catholic family members embarked on military careers. In the 19th and 20th centuries, numerous persons of the gender held important administrative posts in various ministries, for example Baron Jan Joseph Godfried van Voorst tot Voorst , who was the Dutch military commander in chief during the Second World War .
