Christine Jacoba Aaftink (born August 25, 1966 in Abcoude ) is a former Dutch speed skater . Between 1987 and 1996 she won 19 titles at the national Dutch championships and took part in three Winter Olympic Games.

Career

Aaftink was the dominant runner on the sprint courses in her home country in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Between 1987 and 1994 she won the national sprint championships seven times and was Dutch champion seven times in a row on the individual distances of 500 meters and five times in a row over 1000 meters.

Internationally she landed after her debut in the World Cup in November 1986 with an eighth place at the Sprint World Championship in 1988 in West Allis, USA, a first respectable success. With this achievement she qualified for the Olympic Winter Games in Calgary, where she reached a 12th place over 1000 m as the best result. In the following years she improved continuously: at the Sprint World Championship in 1989 in Heerenveen, she was fifth. In 1990 she was in the lead after the first run over 1000 m, but in the end had to be satisfied with third place overall. The following year she led the ranking again after the first day at the World Championships in Inzell, but fell back to third place after a weaker second day.

In 1992 she traveled to Albertville as one of the favorites for the Winter Olympics, then narrowly missed a medal with a fifth place over 500 m and a fourth place over 1000 m. Her third Olympic participation in 1994 in Lillehammer was disappointing for her. She was 19th over 500 meters and 20th over 1000 m.

She ended her international career in 1996 with a fifth place over 1000 meters in the first ever individual distance world championships .

After her resignation, she worked for the Royal Dutch Speed Skating Association (KNSB). She gave up her job in 2007 and has since concentrated on working in a fitness center.
