Loil (to be pronounced as Lool ) is a village in the Dutch municipality of Montferland in the province of Gelderland . It has around 1,535 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) and is not far from the German border (4 km). The municipality of Montferland was created as part of a municipal reform on January 1, 2005 by amalgamating the municipalities of Didam , to which the place belonged at the time, and Bergh . Loil borders Didam in the south, Zevenaar in the west and Doetinchem in the east .

traffic

The main transport links of the place are the A12 (= in Germany A 3 , called "Holland line" that of Arnhem on the Ruhr area ( Oberhausen ) to Cologne leads) and A18 as well as the provincial roads N336, N338 and N813. The next big city Arnhem is about 12 km away from Loil.

Spelling and pronunciation

The village of Loil is first mentioned in writing in 1178 . At that time, the spelling was still 'Loel', whereby the 'e' in the pronunciation provided an extension of the vowel 'o' ( stretching e ), as in German for the city of Soest (pronounced 'Soost'). Later the 'o' was extended by an 'i' without changing the pronunciation (cf. the 'oi' in German ' Voigtländer ', which is pronounced 'Foogtländer').

2000 years of settlement history

The place where Loil is today was already inhabited more than 2000 years ago, probably by West Germanic Chamavers . During excavation work in the 20th century, finds of human settlement from the years between 250 and 50 BC were found. People also lived between 800 and 1500 AD, exactly where the Kloosterstraat and Kapelstraat are today. During excavations in 2001 a number of traces of possibly two buildings from the 9th to 12th centuries were found there.

In the 14th century one speaks of a " Kastell von Loel" (kasteel van Loel), later also called "Gut Loil" or "Haus Loil". In 1357 Albrecht Doys van Loel became the feudal lord of this fort. He received this fief from Jan, the Count of Kleve . After this, Willem van Bergh became the feudal lord, then his son Oswald van Bergh . At the beginning of the 20th century the house was called "Kasteel Tengbergen" and demolished around 1920. The ditch surrounding the fort is filled with garbage and the material from the hill on which the fort previously stood. The surrounding forest has been cleared.

Buildings and sights

Loil has a windmill called “De Korenbloem” (= the cornflower), a Roman Catholic church, consecrated to the name “Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception” (Onze Lieve Vrouw Onbevlekt Ontvangen) and the Sankt-Josefs-Grundschule.
