The Tiel fair cake

The Tieler Kirmeskuchen , also called Kirmeskuchen or love cake , is a kind of honey cake made from honey from the Betuwe , rye flour and hail sugar . The fair cake is traditionally baked in a bakery in Tiel only in October for the Tiel autumn fair . It was recognized as a Dutch cultural heritage in September 2015.

As early as 1871, the fair cake was described by Jan ter Gouw in his book De volksvermaken . A traditional legend is: The farmer's son, in love, bought his beloved a fair cake as a marriage proposal . If she gave him a piece of this honey cake eight or 14 days later while visiting on Sunday, it was the sign for him that she wanted to be his wife. Today, giving a love cake is more an expression of appreciation and friendship.
